Army Project A1 - Insurgent MBT - The African Main Battle Tank // TM-44 Successor
(Subprojects: Subproject - Air Force Project D1 - Quadrotor Multi Purpose Reconnaissance & Targeting Drone, Army Project M1 - Interrupter ATGM, and Army Project E1 - Blockade APS System)

Africa has long struggled with a simple issue when it comes to military technology. It lacks much of its own, and has to rely on outside countries. The Maghreb, amongst many other African countries wish to change that. In an effort to make Africa more self-reliant on weaponry, a joint development project will be pursued between the Maghreb,, the WAF, and the FRC. Outside parties contacted may be the Triumvirate and Texas, amongst a few others, but the list will remain as exclusive as possible. Additional partners may be added if all three involved parties agree to it.

The Insurgent MBT will not only be a new level of native African achievement, but an upgrade in some aspect from virtually any tank in active service in the African militaries. The tank looks to incorporate lessons learned from years of battle and observation. Terrain will also play a role in tank design, with a new extra-deep fording kit being created for kits to traverse many of the unbridged African rivers and better navigate marshes. These considerations made almost exclusively for service on the African continent. Many of the requirements for the tank will push African technology to its limits, but then again that's the purpose of this endeavour.

The Insurgent will also implement a relatively new concept in Africa. Minor quadrotor drones, either for surveillance or suicide missions can be operated off of the tank. A total of four of these small drones can be launched and landed on the MBT, even when traveling at up to speeds of 40 km/h (on a relatively flat terrain). The docking ports for the drones will be on gyroscopic stabilizers. While the feature is relatively minor, it effectively lets the tank multiply its field of vision and also serve as a vehicle to either gather more battlefield information and/or take out minor targets. In the more common case that the drones are used for scouting and reconnaissance, they will link into local military command centers and back to the tank crew to assist the crew and battle computer in providing more accurate information on enemy movements, terrain, etc.. The drones can also be used in conjunction with the Intruder missile and multispectral mast (to be detailed later), as a secondary guidance system system via secure data link or laser guidance.
The battle computer itself will be a mix of an optional HUD and/or computer displays connected to mobile, local, regional, theater, and special command databases, along to with other tank computers. They will also share connections with other vehicles to discern their location relative to themselves, and track aircraft, helicopters, drones, and incoming threats (airborne or otherwise). The outside will be observed by a series of multispectral (IVS/UV) cameras, sensor fusion if you would. The computer will also use an adaptable algorithm to try and predict the movement of enemy targets (on land or otherwise) whose locations are either unconfirmed or lost. In the event that a member of the crew is severely injured or otherwise indisposed, the battle computer will be able to take on that member’s duties at a nominal level. The battle computer (and the tank commander), will have access to an erectable, low visibility mast multispectral mast. The 8 meter mast, which has sights in IR, EO, and VIS. A new anti-tank missile made, specifically for the Insurgent, will also be created. The missile will be able to launch with a miniature booster out of the VLS cells and fly over hills or other blocking infrastructure, guided by the mask (laser or secure data link), until onboard systems takeover once the target is spotted by the missile. The missile will be the Interrupter anti-tank missile.The Interrupter will have an effective range of just over 20km. The battle computer for the Insurgent will be kept in a faraday cage, inside several layers of protection, everything from shock protection to electricity, static and humidity/liquid precautions will be taken.

While the Insurgent may at first seemingly give off a large signature in many aspects, it will incorporate methods to reduce its IR signature, along with silencing its instrument and as many moving parts as possible. To further reduce the signature of the tank a RAM coating and geometry of the outer surfaces (turret included) will be adjusted. Protection is expanded by a soft and hard kill APS. The APS will feature an early detection system (linked into the battle computer and HUD), also connected directly to two dozen Blockade anti-missile fragmentation grenades (octopacked into multiple points internally) which will neutralize incoming threats (notably ATGM, TOW, and FIMs).
The final means of protection for the Insurgent will be an active camouflage system. Active camouflage for the tank will work through strips of hundreds of thousands, if not millions of low-energy microLEDs being put on plating around the entire tank. These LEDs will be controlled by the battle computer, and adapt to the environment around the tank. The mounted cameras will be able to detect minute changes in color, and adapt certain individual or groups of LEDs to change color accordingly. This will give the tank a major advantage over enemies when in visual range as it’ll make it one step harder to detect. These LEDs will be reinforced to take a beating, being water proof, able to take shear scrapes and have hardened surfaces against flying objects such as pebbles or otherwise.The active camouflage system, similar to the battle computer will be developed for more than just the Insurgent platform however.
The tank will also feature two separate power banks, to power the ETC weapons and other modular systems. The weapons themselves, especially the ETC oriented ones will be made in a HEA (high entropy alloy) that is primarily titanium and aluminum.
KRYPTON ARMOUR
The Insurgent seeks to maximise the available protection, while simultaneously ensuring that additional weight beyond the platform’s 57.5 tonne hard ceiling was not breached. Such specialist armour requires specialised materials, even some that people don’t normally associate with armour schemes. Given their recent experiences in the field, the GMC will work with various African, European, and American nations in order to generate the most effective and appropriate armour scheme within the parameters provided.
The outer hull of the Insurgent is composed of Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al (aka Ti-10-2-3). This Titanium alloy is normally used on airframes, but offers one of the best mixes of strength vs. toughness. It is a near beta alloy, developed primarily for high-strength applications in the 1241 MPa (180ksi) range. The alloy also possesses the best hot-die forgeability of any commercial titanium alloy, and is suitable for near net-shape forging applications and isothermal forging. Ti-10-2-3 also offers high strength/toughness combinations and is deep-hardenable. This armour is dubbed KRYPTON.

The base armour of the Insurgent is tightly layered, with each of the three layers of armour composed of differing materials, so as to generate the greatest total degree of survivability against kinetic and high-explosive munitions.
The innermost layer of the armour, closest to the chassis, is composed of panels of titanium spaced armour, with a depleted-uranium mesh embedded between the spacings, adjacent to the innermost sections of the titanium. The dU is utilised as a mesh, rather than as pellets, as the mesh configuration has been shown to better interrupt the passage of plasma jets from EFPs of HE-based AT weapons.
The mesh is heavy, but not outside of acceptable parameters, given the weight saved in other areas of the tank’s development.
The second layer is composed of boron-carbide with the whole layer being further encased in another layer of titanium. This is a break from the use of boron-carbide-backed tungsten disulfide. The titanium alloy in use on the Insurgent is considerably lighter and stronger than that used on other similar vehicles, increasing the effectiveness of the composite significantly while reducing weight. In a further push to reduce weight, boron-carbide-backed tungsten disulfide was chosen not to be used. It weighs three times as much as equivalent boron-carbide while protecting twice as well. The advantages of the new alloy are such that it was deemed the armor of the system roughly comparable in quality to tanks in use already, and the additional weight not worth the additional protection.
The third and outermost layer of the integral armour scheme is composed of titanium-encased boron carbide, a form of composite armour composed of multiple layers of titanium and boron carbide ceramic. The high tensile-strength titanium plates hold the ceramic in position and the ceramic maintains its resistance to shock even when fragmented, as long as it remains held together.
All of the armour panels can be removed in-toto, allowing for easy maintenance and rapid repair of combat damage. Armour panels themselves consist of all three layers as detailed above, and, upon removal, each can be separated out further for repair or replacement.
Fireproof armoured bulkheads separate the crew compartment from the engine bay, which itself forms part of the forward passive protection suite.
Fuel and ammunition are located within armoured sub-compartments with integral anti-spalling layers, and those self-same anti-spalling systems are also used to protect the internals of the crew compartment. The spall lining is also designed to provide a high degree of noise and thermal insulation, making the Insurgent extremely quiet internally analogous (to the operators), to a civilian vehicle. The most important detail of all however is that the tank, unlike some tanks around the world, will feature central climate control, ensuring that the tanks don’t become hellholes for their crews.

The elements of the program that require outside assistance will continue to be developed by the involved countries and rolled out onto the tanks once they are complete.
A main battle tank will be pursued as the main object of the program, however a few more minor projects will also be undertaken. Amongst them, a multipurpose river and coastal patrol boat to help move troops across the diverse landscapes of Africa, a new set of logistics vehicles, and a set of utility and light attack helicopters for close air support.
The projects will be given a total budget of $27 (Bil.), paid evenly by all three partners. Development is expected to take a total of seven years, however the tank will be ready for production in four. The development of the purely African systems will take longer than the initial tank itself, which will take four years due to assistance from outside powers.

Further Expansion On Selected Subprojects
The quadrotor multipurpose reconnaissance and targeting drone (QMRTD) is a new type of short range, small drone. The drone will function in the traditional role that drones of this size done, performing routine reconnaissance missions to aid troops on the ground. An addition however will be the second role of the QMRTD. Which will be guiding long range ATGMs beyond the horizon (primarily when launched from the Intruder MBT). Instead of carrying heavy camera equipment, it can be refitted to carry a device that establishes a secure data link with fired ATGMs. Using this link (or an installed laser), it can help supplement the guidance system of the missile and mast in case of any issues with a clear visual path or otherwise. The drones will have an operating range of just over 15km, and be able to stay aloft for and hour and a half. The engine will be a silent electric motor. The unit cost for the QMRTD is $5,000.
The Interrupter ATGM will be a further advance in the assortment of ATGM weapons currently utilized by African militaries. Hostile targets are tracked with a mm radar set, with IVisual tracking. In shots taken outside of the direct line of sight of the tank, a mask can be used to assist the missile with guidance, while a QMRTD (or equivilant) may also be used to carry out the job if there are obstructions or other obstacles in the way. Further, in strikes that push the 20-25km range of the ATGM (dependent on local conditions and terrain), the drone may be required should it go beyond the visual horizon of the mast. The ATGM will have onboard tracking and targeting equipment which will take over if required at the terminal phase. During terminal phase, for maximum penetration a one or two stage explosive HE warhead will strike enemy targets (dependent on type of target). Further, the terminal phase of flight phase of the Interrupter will have a microscramjet for maximum penetration.
Navy Project P1 - Multimission Coastal-Inland Boat
The MCIB will be an upgrade from the motley collection of small coastal patrol craft currently and river boats currently utilized by African militaries. The boat, portable by aircraft and truck, will feature general advances in rigid hull technology. The boat can either be backed in with a logistics vehicle or airdropped into the location where it is required. The boat will help give infantry more mobility in the river and lake regions of Africa, being able to not only act as close fire support against shoreline installations, but also improve infantry mobility, allowing troops and weapons to be transported rapidly up river in areas that may not have any optimal areas for pontoon bridges or well made roads. Another function of the MCIB will be for special forces in special INFIL/EXFIL situations where remote enemy compounds or targets are located on shallower waters and marshy/swampy areas. Further the boat can be used in humanitarian crisis’ as it can easily navigate flooded waterways and stays afloat even when completely flooded. The boat, like all military technology, is reinforced against EMP with bulletproof screens setup where the crew operates their equipment. The draft of the MCIB will be negligent enough to make the ship capable even in waist deep water.
The MCIB will also have variable armament. While RC two chainguns will come standard with each ship, four multipurpose weapon ports will be installed for use by troops on the ship. A wide variety of weapons can be installed on these ports (also behind bulletproof glass) such as rifles, grenade launchers and even short range ATGMs. In times of civilian use, these ports can have harnesses, steel cable, or other life saving gear attached to them. The MCIB will also have a gyroscopically stabilized port capable of launching and landing a single QMRTD, used exclusively for reconnaissance purposes. Present will also be a launch tube, able to propel capsules (quart sized) up to 15 feet into the air or 50 feet horizontally. These capsules can be filled with smoke, flares, chaff, etc. The R&D budget will be $500 (Mil.) over a year and a half.

Army Project S1 - Strongman Multipurpose Logistics Vehicle

The Strongman Multipurpose Logistics Vehicle (SMLV) will be the next update in supply chain technology for African militaries. With increasing levels of conflict occurring throughout the continent, sometimes internal, other times outside, the Maghreb and its allies must be able to take the fight to the enemy. In order to do so, logistics must be able to be maintained. Further, the expansive nature of many African countries make the SMLV a necessity.
The SMLV will, as the name implies, serve different roles depending on what is required. Some of the more common variants will include personnel transport, supply transport, ammunition and mortar carrier, wrecker, water tender, tanker, and crane. Some variants will be a fully enclosed truck, while others will feature a cab area with a pickup bed like area in the back, or mounted equipment. While the vehicle will not be able to climb over tall obstacles to the same extent that the Insurgent can, the SMLV will be able to ford into 3.5m worth of water with a snorkel, dependent on the version of the SMLV. The same consideration was made due to the diverse environment of Africa. Further, similar to the Insurgent, the vehicles will feature central climate control. This will allow temperature sensitive materials to be transported, but also keep the crews from going insane. The vehicle will also feature an array of IR and visual cameras, helping supply information to central command and to give crews a better view of the battlefield. While the SMLV and its variants will all have GPS positioning, as is standard, they will also feature a relative location system, allowing the relative location of the vehicles to be discerned by analyzing travel paths and the relative position of vehicles from one another.
A lighter version of the SMLV, the LSMLV, will also be created as a subclass. The LSMLV will exchange some of the diversity the SMLV has in variants (mainly construction vehicles and cranes), for improved range, mobility, speed, gas tank size, fording, and climbing abilities. The LSMLV will also have a mannable weapon port at the back, unlike the SMLV, which can have a grenade/rocket launcher or rifle attached to it. The LSMLV will be able to ford up to 6 meters with a snorkel and proper modifications, and 4m with simply a snorkel. The LSMLV will also be able to climb over 1m obstructions at an angle of 60 degrees.
The vehicle will also have a dedicated subclass, the S3 Mobile Battlefield Command Center (MBCC). The MBCC will have installed electronics and avionics to allow battles to be monitored in real time as their feeds will link into a joint forces system, pulling from live camera feeds from armored units, helmet cams, drone intelligence, and field intelligence gathered by the subordinate DRS agencies. The MBCC will have several compartments, hosting up to 20 battlefield commanders and signal men. If a MBCC is eliminated, the subordinate units will immediately be automatically relayed to the next MBCC or the next highest command. Similar to the LSMLV, the MBCC will have a mannable weapon ports. Two, one front one near the end. They will feature IVisual sights and have two weapons mountable. The MBCC will also have the ability to launch 3 QMRTDs, featuring the same type of docking mechanism as other units. Unlike the other two units, the MBCC will also come standard with active camouflage and the Blockade APS. R&D for the projects will be $4 (Bil.), and will take 2.5 years, except for the MBCC which will take 3.
